BOUNDARY HILL SITE |

Everyone in Franklin Co. is familiar with the location of the Franklin Co. Recycle Center north of Brookville. Few today take into consideration that it is one of the most historically interesting sites in the county. 1. Three Adena Earth Mounds were located within 1/2 mile of this site. 2. Two Stone Mounds celebrated the natural features of this ridge. 3. Owing to the course of the river this site was a seasonal hunting camp grounds of the native people from 3000BP to the time of contact. 4. It is point on the Greenville Treaty Line of 1797. The first Indian Treaty between the newly formed United States and the Indians of the Northwest Territory. 5. Refurred to as Factory Ridge (c.1810) it was the site of a frontier Cotton Mill settlement called Woodville. 6. There is an impressive canal cut at the base of the hill and ruins of Whitewater Canal Lock #20. 7. The Whitewater Valley Railroad made a cut directly through the ridge in 1863, which was excavated prior to the introduction of dynamite. 8. Today the west end of the cut is an exceptional river vista, with wildlife habitat and wet lands worthy of protection. The site is safely accessible from US52 and suitable for future developement as a nature preserve and primitive camping facility. (see map) BOUNDARY HILL SITE Vision: Because the ridge is full of springs, which make a cascade of ice cycles every winter, the path through the cut is best suited for a board walk. This leads to a ideal situation for wheel chair access to the proposed bridge and river vista point at the NW end of the cut. Here then, one of the most difficult aspects of this trails construction could be turned into an asset of extra ordinary charm. Senior Photographers could park at the base of the hill and take a short stroll back through the cut to the bridge and view of the river. Submitted by Paul B. |
